What is Meridia?
Meridia, or sibutramine, is a prescription weight loss drug that works to control appetite by inhibiting the body's ability to reabsorb serotonin and norepinephrine. Meridia is not designed to be used by itself, but should be incorporated into a weight loss program that includes a proper diet and plenty of exercise.
How Does Meridia Work?
Meridia does not work by suppressing the appetite. It is a neurotransmitter reuptake inhibitor that merely enhances the body's normal function. Meridia is not a releasing agent. It does not get inside the cells to boost the release of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Instead, as a reuptake inhibitor, Meridia works outside the cells to stop neurotransmitters from being reabsorbed. Meridia works by affecting natural chemicals in the brain involved in regulating appetite--allowing them to act longer. The appetite control center in the brain is believed to regulate the amount of food eaten through feelings of hunger and fullness.
Meridia and weight loss
People respond differently to Meridia. It works best when it is used as part of a comprehensive weight loss program. Meridia can make you lose up to 4 or more pounds of body weight in the first month itself. If you find that you do not lose at least 4 pounds during the first month, you should notify your doctor so that he or she can re-evaluate your situation. Your doctor may wish to change your dose of Meridia.
Most people who lose weight on Meridia lose it in the first 6 months of treatment. Scientific studies that lasted one year have shown that many people who lost weight and remained on Meridia therapy maintained their weight loss.
